The Presidential Library to illustrate reforms of Peter the Great that influenced the development of tourism in St. Petersburg

3 March 2022

On March 3, 2022 at 11:00 the Presidential Library will host a multimedia lesson for schoolchildren “Great transformations of the great sovereign. The historical significance of the reforms of Peter the Great for the development of the tourism sector in St. Petersburg”. This is the sixth lesson from the cycle of lessons "The origins of St. Petersburg hospitality: events, people, places", organized by the Presidential Library in conjunction with the St. Petersburg State University of Economics.

As part of the lesson, Olga Maslennikova, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Economics and Management in the Service Sector of the St. Petersburg State University of Economics, Development Director of the Petrovsky Aquatoria Model Museum, will talk about the innovations of Peter the Great, which largely influenced the development of the tourism industry. Schoolchildren will learn how the significant changes that the emperor made in the state system, army, education, economy and traditional culture affected the modern tourism economy.

At the lesson the listeners will become aware of the complex and not always obvious connections between the emperor's reforms in various fields in the distant 18th century and the modern development of the tourism industry.

The materials from the Presidential Library’s collections, including more than a million depository items (electronic copies of books and periodicals, archival documents, audio and video recordings, photographs, scientific and educational films and other materials) have been used at the lesson.

The multimedia lesson is free. The event will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library’s portal in the Live broadcasts section and on the institution's YouTube channel.

In the next lessons the listeners will learn about the features of the formation and development of tourism in St. Petersburg and also try to look into the future of the tourism and hospitality industry.
