A film about the history of the Baltic Slavs to be shown at the Presidential Library’s cinema club meeting

10 March 2022

On March 10, 2022 at 16:00 the Presidential Library’s cinema club meeting will host the film "Songs of the Baltic Slavs" directed by Roman Ushakov.

The history of the Slavic Pomerania of the Baltic is the history of peoples who had close family, cultural and trade ties with the peoples of Ancient Russia.

The popular science film tells about the role of the Slavs in the formation of the statehood of Ancient Russia. Its authors not only offer a look into the depths of history, but also share serious scientific information. The film is based on conversations with scientists, filming in museums and on archaeological excavations. The film also includes film footage from festivals of historical reenactments in Russia, Poland and Germany, stories of their organizers and participants.

The project "Songs of the Baltic Slavs" was created by the Higher School of Directors and Screenwriters with the use of a grant from the President of the Russian Federation for the development of civil society.

The entire creative team of the project consisted of students and graduates of the Higher School of Directors and Screenwriters. Film director Roman Ushakov is a graduate of the feature film directing workshop in 2015 (course master – Yuri Feting). The film "Songs of the Baltic Slavs" became his debut work in professional cinema.

The work on the film was very intense: young filmmakers were expected to get acquainted with the history of the Slavic tribes from the shores of the Baltic, meet amazing people, experience filming in the most unusual conditions. Already on the first day of filming, the project team visited the shipyard, where craftsmen recreate extraordinary ships, and were present at the ceremony of laying the boat. For the filming of the historical and cultural festival "Staraya Ladoga - the first capital of Russia", members of the film crew ordered historical costumes for themselves, which allowed them to be in the thick of things without interfering with the course of reconstructions.

There were also presented film expeditions to Pskov, Kaliningrad, Poland and Germany, where interviews with Russian, German and Polish scientists recorded. The film crew spent several days on the Polish island of Wolin, on which an early medieval village was recreated with amazing accuracy.
