The Presidential Library to tell about film director Andrei Tarkovsky

22 April 2022

On April 22, 2022 at 11:00 Moscow time the Presidential Library will host a video lecture entitled “...I always dreamed that I would be needed...": Andrei Tarkovsky and his legacy” as part of the Knowledge of Russia project. The event is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the director's birth.

Andrei Tarkovsky, the son of a famous poet, tried his hand at the Institute of Oriental Studies and exploration until the age of 22, then became a student at the directing department of VGIK. And after 8 years he had instant and brilliant success as he received "Golden Lion" at the International Film Festival in Venice for the film "Ivan's Childhood". Since then, his films have received prestigious international awards and have become classics of world cinema.

Sergey Ilchenko, Doctor of Philology, Candidate of Arts, Professor of the Department of Television Journalism of St. Petersburg State University, Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper "Cultural Petersburg" Sergey Ilchenko will tell about the life and career of an outstanding film director, for whom cinema was not a craft or entertainment, not a source of income, but the meaning of life.

The creation of a historical philosophical film drama Andrei Tarkovsky "Andrey Rublev" (originally called "Passion for Andrei"), which became an event in the cinematic world will be told to the audience by the head of the Public Relations Department of the Mosfilm film concern Gayane Ambartsumyan. Her speech will be based on archival materials from the concern's collections.

Aleksey Senkovsky, chief process engineer of the Mosfilm film concern, will tell about the difficult path to the viewer of the director's version of Tarkovsky's film. The original negative of the legendary tape was lost, the specialists worked with the "intermediate positive" of the film. As a result, the running time of the film increased to 206 minutes - cut scenes were included in it. Senyavsky noted that the film "Passion for Andrei" became "the heaviest film" that was restored at Mosfilm. Students will learn about all stages of restoration and how the personality and skill of the restorer influence the final result.

The researcher of the scientific and educational department of the Tarkovsky Museum Center Tatyana Alekseeva will devote her speech to the children's years of life in the small town of Yuryevets on the Volga, the oldest town in Ivanovo Region, where Tarkovsky with his mother and sister lived with his grandmother in a 15-meter room in a communal house from 1941 to 1943.

Elena Raskatova, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Philosophy of the Ivanovo State University and Maria Milovzorova, Candidate of Philology, Head of the Information and Cultural Center of the Ivanovo State Polytechnic University, will introduce event participants to the materials of the collection of documents "Archive of A. A. Tarkovsky", stored in the regional museum "Museums of the city of Yuryevets". It includes rare documents: Andrei Tarkovsky's manuscripts, photographs, fragments of unique phonosources and others.

The event is free. The meeting will be held in person and will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the VKontakte social network, on the institution's Rutube- and Telegram channels.
