The Presidential Library’s online lecture spotlights sacred music

On May 18, 2022 at 11:00 Moscow time the Presidential Library will host a video lecture entitled "Petersburg and Moscow Branches of Sacred Music at the Turn of the 19th-20th Centuries" within the framework of the cultural and educational project Knowledge of Russia.

Dmitry Stefanovich, member of the Union of Composers of Russia, candidate of art history, head of the department of history and theory of music of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy and head of the concert choir of the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, will tell about the creation of a new style in church music, about the traditions of the Imperial Court Singing Chapel in St. Petersburg. The listeners will learn what role Konstantin Pobedonostsev, chief prosecutor of the Holy Synod and mentor of Russian emperors, played in the reorganization of church singing.

Part of Dmitry Stefanovich's performance will be dedicated to the Moscow Synodal Choir and to Stepan Smolensky, an outstanding figure in Russian culture, who headed the Synodal School and led the choir from 1889 to 1901.

The event will also focus on the difference between the St. Petersburg and Moscow branches of sacred music, what unites them, and what prospects await sacred music in the future.

The online lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcast exclusively in the official group of the Presidential Library VKontakte and on the library's portal in Live broadcasts section.

Entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: for media representatives - through entrance № 2, participants and guests of the event - through entrance № 1.

In order to reduce the risks of the spread of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the use of personal protective equipment during the event is mandatory for all attendees.
