28 September 2022

On September 28, 2022 at 16:00 the Presidential Library will host a film screening "Islands of Memory" based on the materials of the 2022 expedition which took place on the outer islands of the Gulf of Finland Sommers and Gogland.

From June 1-30, 2022, soldiers and commanders of the Russian Search Movement from three regions of the country and the search group of the 90th search battalion of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation took part in the next search expedition "Islands of Memory" from June 1-30, 2022. The partners of the expedition were the Exploratory Movement of Russia, the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, the Russian Geographical Society, as well as the Ministry of Defence, which delivered the expedition members to the islands by sea - landing ships of the Serna type.

The main task of the expedition was to search for the burial places of the defenders of the Fatherland - the lost graves of 1940, the graves of the victims of Soviet evacuation of Tallinn (1941) and the defenders of the island of Gogland under the command of the legendary Colonel Alexei Barinov, who died in 1942. The search engines also tried to find the burial of paratroopers on Sommers Island. And this year, for the first time in 8 years, two burials, one on Sommers Island and one on Hogland Island, were discovered.

The expedition members checked the condition of the monuments on the islands, put them in order, paid tribute to the memory of the heroes by laying flowers and wreaths at the memorials and graves of the soldiers. Particular attention was paid to preparing the islands for military memorial tourism. The search engines set up information stands about the history of Sommers Island and plaques at memorable places of military glory. Young searchers also joined the expedition as this project was primarily intended for them. Its purpose was to increase geographical and historical knowledge about the outer islands of the Gulf of Finland, to form patriotic qualities, to cultivate a sense of belonging to history through participation in a search and research expedition.
