The Presidential Library portrays historian Alexander Presnyakov
On October 25, 2022, at 11:00 Moscow time, the Presidential Library will host a video lecture dedicated to historian Alexander Presnyakov (1870–1929) as part of the Knowledge of Russia project. The lecture will be the fifth in the series "Outstanding Historians of the 19th-20th Centuries", which is held by the Presidential Library jointly with the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Candidate of Historical Sciences, senior researcher at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences Tatyana Zhukovskaya will tell about Alexander Presnyakov, an outstanding representative of the St. Petersburg historical school. In addition to the scientific heritage, the historian's collections in St. Petersburg Institute of Science and Technology have preserved a unique material of diaries and family correspondence. These documents cover the personality of the historian, his activities, entourage, views about the most important historical events.
Varvara Vovina, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Leading Research Fellow of the St. Petersburg Institute of Science, Russian Academy of Sciences, will tell about the contribution that Alexander Presnyakov made to our understanding of Russian annals. In research literature, he is often compared with outstanding contemporary and friend Alexei Shakhmatov, who proposed a new approach to chronicle texts. A comparison of their works, as well as a study of correspondence, suggests that Presnyakov independently came to similar conclusions regarding both some important chronicle plots and the method of studying chronicle writing in general. The lecturer will also dwell on the history of the composition and publication of Alexander Presnyakov's lectures on Russian history.
The event is free. It will be broadcast live on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live broadcasts section, in the Presidential Library’s cinema club group on the VKontakte social network, as well as on the institution’s Rutube-channel.
Cooperation between the Presidential Library and the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences is actively developing. In 2019, a joint series of lectures was held on the territories of Russia as part of the Russian Empire. The lectures are available on the Presidential Library’s portal.
