The Presidential Library to award young winners of "My Peter I" contest and inaugurate a new exhibition

12 December 2022

On December 12, 2022, at 16:00, the Presidential Library will host a solemn ceremony of awarding the winners and laureates of the "My Peter I" essay contest - a joint project with the Kostyor All-Russian literary and art magazine for schoolchildren as well as the World Club of Petersburg residents.

The contest, marking the 350th anniversary of the birth of the first Russian emperor, was held from January 1 to November 15, 2022, and the main condition in its participation was the preparation of creative works based on materials about Peter the Great from the Presidential Library’s electronic collections.

About 1,000 essays were sent by schoolchildren and students of secondary educational institutions under the age of 17 from different parts of Russia. This is the best confirmation that the Presidential Library's collections are in demand, including by the youngest users. Thanks to it, the children were able to learn a lot of new and interesting things about Peter and the Petrine era.

It is worth noting that not only the contest winners but also their teachers and mentors will be awarded at the Presidential Library.

The inauguration of the exhibition of new works by the well-known St. Petersburg graphic artist Elena Ergardt will be timed to coincide with the awards ceremony. The artist stylistically combined the illustrations with the image of a popular print. The simplicity and accessibility of images of this kind, from the Fryazh letters in the 16th century to the engravings of the early 20th century, has always attracted the Russian people. Lubok could be found in a peasant's hut, and in a monastery, and in the royal chambers. Tsarevich Peter had about a hundred of them. Later, in 1711, the emperor founded a special engraving chamber in St. Petersburg. But it all started with those first simple pictures - the prototypes of textbooks, newspapers, calendars and even...comics.

A similar exhibition was already held at the Presidential Library in May and caused a lot of positive feedback. The updated exposition will create a special atmosphere of art comprehension of the most important events in the life of the reformer tsar, immersion in the historical context of the Petrine era. The exhibition will be a real gift and an unforgettable experience for young participants of the awards ceremony and will also become a notable event in the cultural life of St. Petersburg.
