The Presidential Library’s video lecture to portray the last Russian emperor

On May 11, 2023 at 11:00 Moscow time the Presidential Library will host a video lecture Nicholas II: Triumph and Tragedy of Russia dedicated to the 155th anniversary of the birth of the last Russian Emperor as part of the Knowledge of Russia project.

The name of Nicholas II (1868-1918) is associated with the most difficult period in the history of the Russian state. Born on the day of the memory of Job the Long-suffering, Nicholas seemed to be doomed to a tragic fate from the very beginning. Was it possible to avoid a fatal fate? Igor Lukoyanov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Leading Researcher at the Department of Modern Russian History and Deputy Director for Research at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will share his thoughts on this.

Sergey Lebedev, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, Head of the Department of New History of Russia at the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, will tell about the complexity of choosing the further path of development of the state, aimed either at industrialization or agriculture, about the indecision of the emperor.

The event is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the pages on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

Cooperation between the Presidential Library and the St. Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences is actively developing. The first joint series of lectures, dedicated to the territories of Russia as part of the Russian Empire, was held in 2019.
