The Presidential Library to host ethnodictation in the languages of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East

On February 19, 2024 at 14:00 the Presidential Library will host the V All-Russian Ethnodictation in the languages of indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation with international participation.

The educational event, which is an official UNESCO event, is held within the framework of the International Decade of the World's Indigenous Languages (2022–2032) and the Year of the Family, declared by the President of the Russian Federation. The event is also dedicated to International Mother Language Day, which is celebrated annually on February 21.

The All-Russian ethnodictation is intended to attract the attention of the general public to the study and preservation of the languages of indigenous peoples, to help strengthen the status of native languages in the family and society, to increase motivation for the study of language culture in general, as well as to promote and popularize the original culture and traditional family values through the native word, reflected in the works of folklore and literature of the indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East and, in general, the all-Russian values of the multinational people of Russia.

Ethnographic dictation is carried out in two stages. The correspondence stage using online technologies takes place from February 12 to February 22, 2024 in the regions of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, in Moscow, near and far abroad.

The in-person stages will be held on February 16 at RUSSIA EXPO in Moscow and on February 19 at the Presidential Library in St. Petersburg. Anyone interested in the languages and culture of indigenous peoples of Russia is invited to join the event: schoolchildren and students, educators and teachers, scientists and researchers, employees of cultural institutions, etc.

The theme of the ethnographic dictation in 2024 is “Family values and traditions of my people”. Russia is home to small peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East, who have preserved unique linguistic and original cultural traditions, based on a special form of family values based on a system of human upbringing in harmonious interaction with the environment, the transfer of knowledge from the older generation to the younger.

The texts of the dictations will be read by expert lecturers from among teachers and educators of native languages, northern scientists, researchers at the Institute of Linguistic Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, members of regional branches of the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation, as well as active speakers of native languages.

On the day of the event, a summing up of the results of the ethnodictation and a ceremonial presentation of certificates to the participants will take place at the Presidential Library.

The welcome part of the event will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live Broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

The educational event was organized by the Association of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation and its St. Petersburg regional branch, the House of Peoples of Russia, the Center for Traditional Knowledge and Languages of Indigenous Peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East and the Association of Teachers of Native Language and Literature indigenous peoples of the North, Siberia and the Far East of the Russian Federation.

The co-organizers of the event are the St. Petersburg Committee for Arctic Affairs, the Presidential Library, the St. Petersburg branch of the Prosveshchenie publishing house and the Almaz-Graf publishing house.

The letter should contain the full name, date and place of birth, passport data (series, number, place of registration), a list of carry-on equipment, contact phone numbers, the name of the media.

We draw the attention of the media representatives that it is necessary to forward applications for accreditation and arrive at the event in advance.

Entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: for media representatives - through entrance № 2, participants and guests of the event - through entrance № 1.

In order to reduce the risks of the spread of a new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the use of personal protective equipment during the event is mandatory for all attendees.
