The Presidential Library to spotlight the events of the Great Patriotic War in the first half of 1944

On February 20, 2024, at 10:00, a scientific and educational conference dedicated to the participation of the USSR Navy in the Great Patriotic War will be held in the Presidential Library on the eve of Defender of the Fatherland Day.

The theme of the conference covers military events from January to July 1944. There will be heard speeches dedicated to the participation of the People's Commissar of the Navy Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov in directing the combat operations of the fleets during this period; the role of the Baltic Fleet in the defeat of the Nazi invaders; the actions of torpedo boats of the Northern Fleet on enemy communications: the battles of the 255th Marine Rifle Brigade for Crimea and Sevastopol; the creation of the Main Command of the USSR Navy and other important historical topics.

There will also be heard speeches about declassified archival documents telling about the siege of Leningrad and the complete liberation of the city from Nazi invaders, as well as the heroic defence and liberation of Sevastopol and Crimea.

The event will take place as part of the scientific and educational program “Let's preserve the truth about war: a chronicle of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 on the sea". The program, designed until September 3, 2025, the date of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, is based on the materials of the declassified military and historical work “The Soviet Navy during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945” created on the initiative of the People's Commissar of the USSR Navy in the years war of Admiral Nikolai Gerasimovich Kuznetsov.

Representatives of the administration of St. Petersburg, the Main Staff of the Russian Navy, the Maritime Council under the Government of St. Petersburg, the regional public organization of admirals and generals of the Navy “Admirals Club” are planning to join the event.

The event in person is free. The conference will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live Broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.

The Presidential Library pays great attention to the history and achievements of the Russian fleet. The electronic collections of the institution contain many archival documents and materials related to this topic. The annual holding of such major events as Cadet Day and Naval Knowledge Day at the Presidential Library has already become a tradition. In addition, video lectures and exhibitions are regularly held about the creation of the Russian fleet and its role in the history of the country.

Entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only by prior registration and upon showing a passport: for media representatives - through entrance № 2, participants and guests of the event - through entrance № 1.
