The Presidential Library’s video lecture "Library of Ivan the Terrible"

30 May 2024

On May 30, 2024, as part of the video lecture Knowledge of Russia, Oleg Ulyanov, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor, academician of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, will talk about the Ivan the Terrible Library. The video lecture will take place on Senatskaya 3 at 14:00 Moscow time and will be one of the events timed to coincide with the 15th anniversary of the Presidential Library, which is celebrated this year on May 27.

The legendary "Liberia of Ivan the Terrible" (book depository, from the Latin liber – book) continues to be one of the main mysteries of Russian history. Scientists are trying to find answers to the questions: did this library exist, what was its composition, where to look for it. Many fundamental works of the largest Russian historians contain references to the appearance of such a library during the reign of Ivan III and Vasily III. During the reign of Ivan IV, nicknamed the Terrible, the Kremlin library acquired the status of a particularly important state treasure and became known as the Ivan the Terrible Library. The possession of such a unique library meant involvement in the achievements of world history and literature, glorified the power of the Moscow sovereign, symbolized the God-chosen tsarist power. The dramatic fate of this first library in Russia turned it into one of the main mysteries of Russian history. Based on new scientific discoveries, Oleg Ulyanov will propose a solution to the problem of the existence and topography of the oldest Kremlin library, which is the same age as the famous Vatican Library.

The video lecture is free. The meeting will be broadcast on the Presidential Library’s portal in Live Broadcasts section in accordance with the program of live events, on the Rutube-channel of the institution, as well as on the social networks VKontakte and Odnoklassniki.
