Exhibition dedicated to Nicholai Roerich takes place in Presidential Library
The multimedia exhibition Izvara - Roerich's Homeland, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great Russian artist, thinker, and traveler, will be opened from October 14 to 31, 2024, at the Presidential Library (Senate Square, 3).
This multimedia exposition is a joint project between the Presidential Library and the N. Roerich Estate Museum, a branch of the State Budgetary Cultural Institution "Museum Agency" of Leningrad Region. The exhibition is based on photographs and documents from the collection of the Estate Museum and the Presidential Library.
Nikolai Roerich was born in St. Petersburg in 1874. His father, Konstantin, was a notary for the St. Petersburg District Court and a prominent public figure. His mother, Maria, came from a merchant family named Kalashnikov.
The Roerich family's ancestral home in the village of Izvara, in Volosovsky district of the Leningrad region, where the artist lived with his parents and spent the first 26 years of his life, has become the first Russian State Museum of Nicholas Roerich. It was founded in 1984 and now contains more than 11,000 artifacts, including personal possessions and documents from the Roerich family, three original paintings by Nikolai, pieces of applied art, household items from the 18th and early 20th centuries, archaeological findings, natural history collections, rare books and more.
The exhibition Izvara - Roerich's Homeland at the Presidential Library explores the life and works of the artist associated with the estate. Through multimedia exhibits, visitors can learn about the origins of his interest in archeology and ancient history in Izvara, as well as the paintings he created there. The exhibition also tells the story of Nicholas Roerich's exile and his efforts to preserve the world's cultural heritage.
Using exhibits from the Estate Museum and materials from the Presidential Library's collection, the exhibition demonstrates Roerich's dedication to preserving the world's treasures. This led to the signing of the International Roerich Pact in 1935, which initiated the international peacekeeping movement known as Banner of Peace.
Also the multimedia exhibition "Izvara – Roerich's homeland" was opened at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in New Delhi, the capital of India. The exhibition will be open until October 31.
