Lecture at Presidential Library to tell about maritime figures in National Pantheon of Russia

14 April 2025

On April 14th, 2025 at 14:00, Moscow time, there will be a lecture titled Hail the Russian Navy! Maritime Figures in the National Pantheon of Russia.

Karina Valegina, a candidate of historical sciences and head of the scientific and exposition department at the State Museum of Urban Sculpture, will be addressing the audience.

The concept of "honor" in the 18th and 19th centuries was not just an empty phrase to representatives of noble culture. The concept of "the honor of the uniform" represented the dignity and unblemished reputation of an officer, demonstrated in battles and wars, and willingness to sacrifice for the greater good.

The lecture will explore family dynasties where the fathers' businesses were carried on by their sons and other members of the younger generation. Museum necropolises, as examples of privileged places, were also a form of recognition for a person's achievements, and their occupation was often reflected in the artistic design of the memorial monuments.

The audience will learn about the biographies of naval officers who served their country with honor and performed many military feats. The speakers will include the navigator and polar explorer Admiral V. Ya. Chichagov, the commander-in-chief of the Black Sea Fleet, I. A. Hannibal, the vice admiral V. F. Nesvitsky, and the admiral and polar explorer F. F. Matyushkin, among others.

The event is part of the "Triumph of the Victors" scientific and educational project, which is organized by the State Museum of Urban Sculpture in collaboration with the Russian Military Historical Society. The goal of the project is to engage the public in patriotic activities through the stories of the heroes in the National Pantheon, and to promote the cultural heritage of Russia through the National Pantheon.

This is the final lecture in the series on the project. In the first lecture, we discussed the outstanding statesmen and military figures of Russia whose memory is enshrined in the National Pantheon. We learned about Field Marshal B. P. Sheremetev, who led Russian troops during the Northern War (1700-1721) and the founder of Kherson, General I. A. Hannibal. We also discussed the participants of the Patriotic War of 1812, including Generals P. A. Stroganov and F. P. Uvarov.

The second lecture focused on the defenders of Crimea who were honored in the National Pantheon, such as the Russian diplomat A. A. Bezborodko and Admirals A. N. Senyavin and N. S. Mordvinov. We also learned about the first Russian artillery general, P. I. Melissino, who made significant contributions to the defence of Crimea.

The event will take place at Saint-Petersburg, Senate Square, 3.
