The Presidential Library will pay tribute to the acclaimed sculptor Mikhail Anikushin on the occasion of the centenary of his birth

20 October 2017

On October 20, 2017, the Presidential Library will conduct the series of events dedicated to the centenary of widely acclaimed sculptor Mikhail Konstantinovich Anikushin. The “October’s age-mate” multimedia exhibition, which will tell about the most dramatic events in Mikhail Konstantinovich’s life, the history of creation of his most outstanding works, among which is the monument to Alexander Pushkin in the Square of Arts in St. Petersburg, the monument to the heroic defenders of Leningrad, the monument A. P. Chekhov in Moscow and many others, will be officially open at 3 pm.

Photographs and documents from the master’s family private archive, provided by his daughter Nina Mikhailovna Anikushina, who will take part in the opening of the exposition, will be displayed for guests of the exhibition on the plasma panels of the gallery on the first floor. Most part of these materials have already been digitized and added to the electronic stock of the Presidential Library. Down the line a collection dedicated to Mikhail Konstantinovich will be created out of these sources.

After the official opening of the exhibition, there will be a screening of the dedicated to the sculptor movie entitled “Introduction” with a participation of its director Zhanna Romanova.

The concept of the brought out as a film title “introduction” is complex in the movie by Romanova: this is the presentation of the accomplishments of the People’s Artist of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor, laureate of the Lenin Prize M. K. Anikushin; and learning his unique personality; and, which is probably most important, “an introduction” to the process of the sculptor’s work on the image of his new hero and his character expression in author’s unique plastic.

The movie story is set in Anikushin’s working studio while the process of creating a monument to Chekhov for the Russian capital is going on. It is important for the filmmaker to express through the close-ups all the tension of the sculptor’s thought, while he is completely taken with the so complicated decrypting of the writer’s personality, which Anikushin well understood and tried to put into his work. This silent dialogue of the two artists is perfectly represented in Zhanna Romanova’s movie, including a remarkable camera work of Nikolai Vinogradsky.

The event will be held in the multimedia hall of the Presidential Library at the address: 3 Senate Square, St. Petersburg, RF 190000.
