The first English-Russian toponymic encyclopedia to be presented at the Presidential Library

On the eve of the FIFA 2018 FIFA World Cup, on February 9 at 14:00 the Presidential Library will host a press conference where the Anglo-Russian toponymic online encyclopedia "Saint-Petersburg" will be presented for the first time. It contains the names of all objects of the urban environment of St. Petersburg written in Latin: railway stations, monuments, post offices, schools and others. These names can be used on city signs, transport schemes, in guidebooks for tourists.

Unified rules for the transliteration and translation into English of the names of urban sites were adopted in St. Petersburg in 2015. Until now, there were no such standards in Russia. On the eve of the FIFA World Cup 2018, the first toponymic encyclopedia was prepared on the basis of the rules.

At the press conference "Questions of multilingual toponymy and the creation of the first encyclopedia on the translation and transliteration of urban environment in St. Petersburg on the eve of the FIFA 2018 FIFA World Cup", the experts will talk about the practical implementation of the rules with the help of an encyclopedia, and will also discuss and share experiences with other regions of Russia.

In addition, on this day, the first toponymic encyclopedia will be handed over to the Presidential Library, which will ensure the widest possible access to it.

The event is organized by: Presidential Library, the St. Petersburg Regional Office of the Union of Russian Translators, the Translation Company “Literra”, “T-Service” Company, the St. Petersburg Translation Club.

The event will be attended by members of the working group for the creation of an encyclopedia on the translation and transliteration of urban environment of St. Petersburg, representatives of St. Petersburg government committees, representatives of the St. Petersburg regional branch of the Union of Russian Translators and the translation communities of Moscow, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk.

Accreditation of media representatives to the event in the Presidential Library (Senate Square, 3) is until 14:00 on February 8, 2018.

We draw your attention that the entrance to the Presidential Library is carried out only upon showing a passport: guests and participants of the event - through the entrance № 1, representatives of the media - through the entrance № 2.
