Regions of Russia: “Picturesque Valaam” exhibition mounted in Peterhof

22 July 2018

Until September 12, 2018 the Benois Family Museum (Peterhof State Museum-Reserve) is holding an exhibition “Picturesque Valaam”, which displays works by modern artists from the collection of “Zolotoy Plyos” Moscow Art Gallery.

The Valaam archipelago is situated in the north of the Ladoga Lake. Its original, almost pristine nature really impresses. The ancient monastery attracts believers from all the corners of the country and abroad. The history of the Valaam is closely related to the Romanov House, royal owners of Peterhof. Representatives of the royal family and monarchs personally visited the isles and contributed to the community of monks.

Valaam has been inspiring modern artists the same as their renowned predecessors. Ivan Shishkin, Arkhip Kuindzhi, Fyodor Vasilyev – outstanding representatives of the Russian landscape school – created their works here. “Zolotoy Plyos” Moscow Art Gallery has been organizing outdoor painting events for modern artists for more than 15 years in a row. Its collection features more than a hundred paintings and prints with the archipelago views. The exhibition in the Benois Family Museum showcases the best watercolor and oil paintings by artists from different cities of Russia.
