Internet and History: Virtual exhibition dedicated to Alexander Nevsky is available on the website of the Arts and Culture Museum of Novgorod Land

10 July 2018

On July 10 2018 the State Arts and Culture Museum of Novgorod Land will provide access to the virtual exhibition of works by Novgorod artists which spotlight Alexander Nevsky. The virtual exhibition featuring works from museum collections will become available on its website.

Alexander Nevsky (1220—1263) – was the Prince of Novgorod, Grand Prince of Vladimir, an outstanding statesman, military leader and diplomat.

Alexander’s father was an enthusiastic and powerful Prince Yaroslav Vsevolodovich, the great-grandson of Monomakh. Alexander spent his childhood and adolescence in Novgorod, where his father assigned him to reign with his elder brother Feodor. Alexander’s grandfather was the Prince of Novgorod and Galicia Principality Mstislav the Daring, who had glorified Rus’ by his numerous feats. The image of that brave and noble man was a model for young Alexander.

In 1236 Yaroslav moved to Kiev, and at the age of 16 Alexander began to reign in Novgorod on his own. In 1240 the Swedish army undertook “a crusade” against Rus’ and the Swedish ships entered the Neva. Upon receiving news of the enemy, Alexander did not wait for the full mobilization of the Novgorod militia or request assistance from Vladimir. With his small army and Novgorod and Ladoga men he attacked the Swedish camp at the mouth of the Izhora River and won a brilliant victory. For this victory he was called Nevsky. He was just 19 at that time.

The project will be accessible on the museum’s website until July 23 2018.
