Exhibitions: “Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The Caucasus. History and Modern Times” exposition in Yasnaya Polyana

23 July 2018

A new exhibition “Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The Caucasus. History and Modern Times” is underway in the Volkonsky House (Lev Tolstoy Museum-Estate “Yasnaya Polyana”, Tula Region) until August 19. It highlights the period of time when the writer stayed in the Caucasus and focuses on various sources reflected in his “Caucasian” works. For the first time the Volkonsky House Exhibition Hall showcases museum items from the Lev Tolstoy Literary and Ethnographic Museum (the branch of the Chechnya Republic National Museum) which give an insight into the everyday life, manners and customs typical of peoples of the North Caucasus. The exposition is complemented by books from the writer’s memorial library, which the writer addressed while writing Caucasian works, and graphic works from the non-memorial collections of Lev Tolstoy Museum-Estate “Yasnaya Polyana”.

The exhibition spotlights two anniversaries celebrated this year: 200th anniversary of the city of Grozny and 190th anniversary of the birth of Lev Tolstoy.
