Internet and History: Russia’s Ministry of Defense website launches interactive section to spotlight the Main Navy Day Parade

The official website of the Ministry of Defense of Russia has launched a historical and educational section that spotlights the Main Navy Day Parade scheduled for July 29, 2018. The section unveils the celebration concept and particular features of the parade in St. Petersburg and Kronstadt, basic tactical and technical characteristics of battleships, that will take part in the celebrations. Users will have an opportunity to study the order of ships, that enter naval celebrations in commemoration of the Navy Day at the main naval bases – in Astrakhan, Baltiysk, Vladivostok, Novorossiysk and Sevastopol.

Infographics content features overviews of military airplanes and helicopters of the Russian Naval Aviation involved in the parade, including basic tactical and technical characteristics of flight vehicles.

The section is primarily focused on the centenary of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Navy founded in 1918. Users can access archival photo materials and extracts from newspapers of 1920s from the collections of the Central Naval Library, memoirs of participants of the events, published during the time of development of the Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Navy.

Declassified documents of the Central Naval Archive, which cast light on the preparation and celebration of the first postwar Navy Day Parade in 1945, are available, too. An interactive map of maritime forts of Kronstadt fortress of St. Petersburg with the description of highlights from the history of these defensive fortifications will attract a great deal of interest.
