30 July 2018

The exhibition “The ancient past of the Neva lands” has opened in the Peter and Paul Fortress (St. Petersburg).

The exhibition, featuring items from the collection of the State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, focuses on the historical, cultural and archaeological exploration of the Neva lands. It is based on the richest collection of items dated between 14th — early 18th cc., unearthed during archaeological excavations in the area of the Oreshek fortress, located on Orekhovy Island at the source of the Neva River in Lake Ladoga.

Archaeological works in the Oreshek Fortress were led by A. N. Kirpichnikov jointly with V. M. Savkov between 1968–1970, and by V. I. Kildyushevsky during 1971–1975.

Archaeological finds displayed at the exhibition illustrate the four-century long history of the Oreshek Fortress: from 1323 up to the beginning of 18th century. On display are weapons, household utensils, handicrafts and tools, dress and jewelry etc.
