The new exhibition “Geniuses of Russians Abroad. The Return of Names” opened on August 9, 2018 in the M.A. Vrubel Omsk Regional Museum of Fine Arts, the Governor-General Palace. A unique project showcases drawings of ten world renowned artists from Russia. Some works had been on display at the State Hermitage Museum.
Vasily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Alexander Alexeev, Andrey Lanskoy, Natalya Goncharova, Ilya Grekov, Konstantin Tereshkovich, Sonia Delaunay, Grigory Pozhidayev – these artists are well-known across Europe. Their works go on display in the world’s major museums, nevertheless some names have not become famous in the homeland, in Russia. Together they make up the phenomenon of Russians abroad.
All the artists, whose works are presented at the exhibition, were born in the Russian Empire, but for some reasons had to leave their native country. It was there – abroad, that they won fame. Each of them made a contribution to the world art and the cultural revolution in Europe.
The Russian cultural context regained its world renowned emigrants some twenty or thirty years ago through the efforts of St. Petersburg museums.
