History and Culture: “Central Figures of Russian History” exhibition of postage stamps presented in St. Petersburg

7 November 2018

To mark the National Unity Day the A. S. Popov Central Museum of Communications (St. Petersburg) presents the exhibition of postage stamps “Central Figures of Russian History”.

The main purpose of the exhibition is to display stamps which bear the images of historical and political figures.

The world’s first postage stamp featuring the profile of Queen Victoria was introduced in the UK in 1840. Other countries - Spain, Luxemburg and the USA - followed the tradition of honoring state officials on stamps.

In Russian philately the images of Emperors appeared in 1913 with a series timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the House of Romanov.

The exhibition will be open until November 21, 2018.
