IT and History: Indiana University digitized an extensive collection of Russian military topographic maps

1 August 2019

The Indiana University (USA) has digitized an extensive collection of Russian military topographic maps (from 1883 to 1947).

This digitization project received positive recognition in May 2019, when the Indiana Geographic Information Council recognized IU Libraries with an Excellence in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) award for their outstanding achievement in incorporating GIS technology into the grant project.

The Russian Military produced these maps during World War II, and they now offer students and scholars across the globe a unique perspective of the historical context of the time period (1883 -1947).
