31 January 2020

Gosfilmofond of Russia launched the media platform "Map of Victory". The website with an interactive map of the history of the Great Patriotic War is based on a digitized documentary newsreel from the Gosfilmofond funds and archive in Belye Stolby. The materials have not been published before in such a volume.

The first stage of the project provides uploading the newsreel of 1941-1945 digitized by Gosfilmofond. The platform user could select a period and any point on the site map. On click, a new window appears. It may be Soviet or foreign newsreel shot at a given period in this particular location.

The second stage of the project provides improvement of the ready website with the other documentary materials related to the newsreel: photographs, memoirs, historical essays, audio materials and even feature films.

Gosfilmofond is planning to invite to join the project other Russian and foreign archives, museums, and institutes, in particular, regional archives and cultural institutions. At the next stage of the project’s development, the website will be featured with the digitized film materials from the Gosfilmofond collection devoted to other topical and significant dates in the history of our country: the 60th anniversary of the first human to journey into outer space (2021), the 100th anniversary of the formation of the USSR (2022) and others.

The start of the Map of Victory project is scheduled for March 2020.
