History of Moscow: Exhibition marking the 175th anniversary of the famous Moscow collector Ivan Tsvetkov presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery

12 February 2020

On February 11, 2020, the State Tretyakov Gallery (Moscow) opened an exhibition marking the 175th anniversary of the famous Moscow collector Ivan Evgenievich Tsvetkov (1845-1917), who was a founder of a private art gallery. His collection included about 2,000 works, featuring everyday scenes, landscapes, views of old Moscow and other sites, self-portraits of artists.

In 1898–1901, Ivan Tsvetkov built a two-storied mansion for his collection on Prechistenskaya embankment, not far from the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, facing the Kremlin and the State Tretyakov Gallery. The exterior and the interior decor was fulfilled in an old Russian log house style. The author of the project was the artist Vasily Vasnetsov, a friend of Tsvetkov. Since 1909, Tsvetkov's collection was opened to visitors in this house, then it was closed in 1926. Most of the collection entered the State Tretyakov Gallery.

The exhibition is focusing, on the one hand, on the Tsvetkov's collection as part of the State Tretyakov Gallery, and the other hand, on the history of the museum as a whole.

The exhibition will run until May 1, 2020.
