Internet and Society: International online exhibition "City as a Writer's Workplace" launched

2 July 2020

The international online exhibition "City as a Writer's Workplace" brought together 100 photographs and texts by writers and artists from around the world. It was arranged by administration of the "Ulyanovsk - UNESCO City of Literature" program. The exposition is presented in English and Russian.

The exhibition's idea is to collect photographs and short texts featuring the city places where the authors like to write. The project helps to comprehend the writers' relationship with the city. It also allows authors from different countries to learn more about the work of others. The photographs go together with the links to the writers' websites. Initially, applications were accepted only from the UNESCO Cities of Literature. Authors from other places showed interest in the project, and the organizers expanded the exhibition.

The online exhibition includes photographs from Europe, Australia, Russia, New Zealand, the USA, Israel, the United Kingdom, South Korea, China, India and South Africa. It is exciting to study the changes in the writers' workplaces: some write at home at a table, in a cafe or a garden, others create poems right on a smartphone. Some writers are inspired by cycling or isolation. Others work on a train. The city colours and sounds are also sources of inspiration. Interestingly, many authors write by hand today.
