Society and Culture: "Wassily Kandinsky and Russia" exhibition from the collection of the State Russian Museum presented in Syktyvkar

6 September 2020

The National Gallery of the Komi Republic (Syktyvkar) launched an exhibition "Wassily Kandinsky and Russia" from the collection of the State Russian Museum. The exhibition project is as part of the festive program marking the 100th anniversary of the Komi Republic.

Syktyvkar - the city that Wassily Kandinsky visited more than 130 years ago, hosts the artist's paintings for the first time. The exposition includes works painted by the artist before he left Russia for Germany in 1922, as well as folk art items that inspired the artist throughout his life.

The exposition provides the opportunity to look at the master's original masterpieces and trace the artist's way from traditional to the non-objective art, as well as realize the importance of folk art in the development of Kandinsky's art language. The exhibition presents unique early realistic landscapes of the estate possessed by the artist's first wife. In 1889, Kandinsky left it and made a journey to Vologda Province. The exposition also showcases fantastic paintings, executed in oil on glass, reflecting the symbolic period of the Kandinsky's oeuvre. Several abstract pictures illustrate the artist's innovation. For example, the "St. George" painting is displayed next to the icon of the same name. Kandinsky could express feelings and emotions using art instruments only, striving for the representation of deep feelings with colours and rhythm.

The exhibition will run until October 11, 2020.
