19 October 2020

The Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg opened the exhibition “Taimyr Nomad. Culture. Art. Mastery”. The exhibition has been prepared in cooperation with the Taimyr House of Folk Art and is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the formation of the Taimyr (Dolgano-Nenets) National District.

The temporary exhibition features the works of contemporary Taimyr artists, whose work reflects the traditional cultures of the small indigenous peoples of Taimyr - the Dolgan and Nganasan. These are the rovduzh paintings by Boris Molchanov (rovduga - suede made from deerskin), created from old nukes that once served as a covering for summer tents; and graphic sheets of Motumyaku Turdagin, describing in detail the life of the people of "nya" (self-name Nganasan); and works of Taimyr bone carvers, which are really difficult to surpass in skill.
