Territory of Russia: Moscow to host the "Lapland: Tales of the Russian North" exhibition marking the 90th anniversary of the Lapland Nature Reserve
The State Darwin Museum (Moscow) participates in the Ecological Festival "Meet the Reserves!" 2020. Recently the museum launched the exhibition "Lapland: Tales of the Russian North", which marks the 90th anniversary of the Lapland Nature Reserve. Photographs for the anniversary exhibition have been made by reserve specialists and friends-photographers during several years and different seasons. It includes pictures of various landscapes of the Kola Peninsula and protected animals - wild reindeer, European beaver and others. Many exhibits are showcased for the first time.
Lapland Nature Reserve located in the central part of Murmansk Region. Its area, along with the protected zone, covers about 3000 km2. People have never lived on this territory, so the entire reserve is a wild and primeval nature area. There are the pristine forests that remain since the time of the glacier. Their age is from 3 to 10 thousand years, and some trees are 300-400 years old. There are practically no forests like that in Europe.
Today the Lapland Nature Reserve is one of the largest protected areas in Russia. Besides conservation and research activities, the reserve is actively involved in environmental education and cooperates with national parks in Finland.
