Society and Culture: Exhibition "City of the Sun. Soviet Art of the 1930s - 1950s" presented in Omsk

26 November 2020

The Hermitage-Siberia Centre in Omsk launched the exhibition of socialist realism from the collection of the ROSIZO. The exposition "City of the Sun" will run until February 28, 2021.

It includes over 40 splendid works of the 1930s - 1950s from the collection of the State Museum and Exhibition Centre "ROSIZO" - painting, sculpture and applied art.

The Utopian City of the Sun is a model of the "bright communist future". It used to be a goal of the USSR since its establishment in 1922. Soviet art of the 1930s - 1950s, which obtained all apparent features of realism, was utopian.

The 1930s were a time of real triumph of socialist realism. Bright and dynamic art provided a powerful optimistic charge. But it gradually lost its energy by the end of the 1950s, despite some outstanding achievements. The socialist realism remained the popular art, but step by step, it was forced out of the artistic process by the new trends.

These works are showcased in Omsk for the first time. They are a vivid document of the era, which reflects a significant period of Russian history with its creation pathos and enthusiasm, achievements and delusions.
