Museums of Russia: Presentation of the new exposition "Archeology of Ladoga" took place in Leningrad Region

3 December 2020

On November 27, 2020, the Staraya Ladoga Museum-Reserve (Leningrad Region) held a presentation of the new exposition "Archeology of Ladoga".

The exposition occupies the restored Arrow Tower - a rather modern and the only warm tower of the fortress. The tower's restoration took place in 2012-2015. It involved new materials and technologies to support the required temperature and humidity conditions, which are necessary for showcasing the most valuable items from the archaeological collection of the Museum-Reserve. The original medieval stonework was opened and preserved - it can be seen from the second and third tower's levels. The creation of the exposition started in 2016.

The new exposition occupies two tower's levels - the third and the fourth. The third level is devoted to the life of the southern Ladoga territory in the Neolithic era. The showcases feature archaeological finds from the unique collection of A. A. Inostrantsev, including such rare items as the human skulls of the new Stone Age. The Arrow Tower also presents pictures with images of ancient people.

The fourth, upper, level, contains finds of the early Middle Ages - the Viking Age. A large-scale model of a settlement and a fortress in the early X century is at the centre of the hall. The visual appearance of dwellings and craft workshops in Ladoga City is based on materials from the archaeological excavations of the local settlement; the fortress is shown at the construction stage. The showcases are placed near the walls. There are a total of 3500 finds - both imported and local household items, jewellery, weapons, clothing and footwear, handicrafts.

The new exposition will run from December 11, 2020.
