History and Culture: "Reviving the Lost" exhibition about the post-war restoration of the painting of St. Isaac's Cathedral opened in Veliky Novgorod

5 March 2021

The exhibition hall of the Nikolsky Cathedral (Veliky Novgorod, Yaroslav's Court) hosts the exhibition "Reviving the Lost". The exposition highlights the work of restorers who recovered the interior decoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral after the Great Patriotic War.

The exhibition presents a part of the collection of St. Isaac's Cathedral, which includes about a hundred pictorial schemes of the cathedral's grandiose paintings, significant for studying the history of the restoration of monumental painting. Many schemes are of the same size as the originals. It provides the opportunity to closely examine fragments of far works and appreciate the scale and grandeur of the cathedral's picturesque decoration. Also, the exhibition showcases restoration sheets with carefully painted pieces of smalt. They were created to replenish the lost fragments of mosaics. A small part of the exposition is devoted to sketches by N. M. Sinyakov, the participant in the restoration of St. Isaac's Cathedral. These drawings portray his fellow restorers, as well as simple tools used by them in difficult post-war years.

The exhibition will run until May 23.
