Memorable Dates of Russia: Kazan to hold a series of events devoted to the 153rd anniversary of A. M. Gorky

28 March 2021

On March 28, 2021, the A. M. Gorky and F. I. Shalyapin Museum (Kazan) will launch a series of festive events marking the 153rd anniversary of A. M. Gorky.

Gorky's name is intimately connected with Kazan - his "spiritual homeland", where the future writer passed his first "universities of life" during his youth in 1884-1888, where he returned as a world-famous author in 1928. Gorky played a significant role in the formation of national literature, including the Tatar and in the fate of the Tatar Soviet writers. Many of them considered Alexei Maksimovich their teacher and guide.

The festive program, which is part of the Year of Native Languages and National Unity in the Republic of Tatarstan, was initiated by the National Museum of the Republic of Tatarstan and its branch - the A. M. Gorky and F. I. Shalyapin Museum.

The celebration will begin with a solemn ceremony of laying flowers at the bust of Maxim Gorky on Gorky/Kurashov Street. Also, the museum will open the exhibition "Maksimych" from the institution's collections. "Maksimych" is Gorky's name given by his friend Fyodor Chaliapin. The exhibition reveals the relationship between the great writer and the genius of the opera scene. It features books, photographs, memorial items, graphic materials and much more.

The festive program will be ended with a gala evening, which will include:

- presentation of the A. M. Gorky Literary Prize, which is included in the register of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Tatarstan in 2018;

- presentation of the "Lumiere Cinematograph" project. It is a new cultural and educational discussion platform intended for all lovers of domestic and foreign cinema. The project was named after the article by Gorky, published in 1896 in "Nizhegorodsky Listok". Most of the cinema club's meetings will be devoted to films about the writer and his works; films close to the writer's art. After the screening, there will be discussions with visitors.

- concert program "Gorky and Music" with the participation of students and teachers of the N. G. Zhiganov Kazan State Conservatory.
