History and Culture: "World of Moscow Estates" exhibition opened

25 April 2021

The Moscow Integrated Museum-Reserve presents an exhibition at the Moscow Regional Museum of Folk Arts and Crafts, devoted to the culture of noble estates near Moscow.

The estates represent the heritage of the Russian landed gentry. The late XVIII - early XIX centuries are its "golden age". Life in estates was a specific form of Russian social activity of this period.

An original aesthetics of estates comprised such elements as libraries, collections of paintings and pieces of applied art, garden and manor architecture, developed by generations of its residents. It was impossible to provide information about every estate within the framework of one exhibition. Thus, the organizers created a universal image of an estate near Moscow. They aimed to show the uniform features of the poetic world, created by owners of the estates, who strived for harmony and life in nature. The exhibition highlights several topics: park, home decoration, reception of guests, the atmosphere of the estate, activities of its residents.

The garden and park life of the estate residents is illustrated by lithographs from the album Views of the Vlakhernskoye Village Possessed by Prince S. M. Golitsyn and sheets from the botanical atlas Eichstätt Garden (Germany, 1750) with engravings by Besler Basilius.

The books of the late XVIII century tell about the diversity of the interests of the Russian gentry. Beaded paintings and items of the first quarter of the XIX century show the skill of the needlewomen. Porcelain and silver dishes, wax models of festive desserts spotlight the tea traditions and holidays.

The exhibition will run until May 27, 2021.
