Internet and Memory of Russia: Special online project "80 Years of the Battle of Moscow" launched
This year marks 80 years since the beginning of the Battle of Moscow. It also celebrates the 80th anniversary of the creation of the People's Militia, which played a significant role in the outcome of the battle and the Great Patriotic War as a whole. A special mos.ru project entitled "80 Years of the Battle of Moscow" is devoted to these significant anniversaries.
The project provides historical and archival information in a simple and visual form. It not only preserves the memory of the legendary salvation of the city from the invaders but also tells exciting details about the life of people at that time, presents Moscow of 1941-1942.
The materials of the special project are arranged in two thematic sections - How They Defended and How They Lived.
The first section describes the beginning of the Battle of Moscow and all its stages: defence, counteroffensive and offensive.
Particular attention is paid to the People's Militia which helped the Red Army to defeat the enemy.
In July 1941, Moscow and Moscow Region formed 12 divisions of the People's Militia. In October, their number grew four times. The first volunteers were residents of Moscow. The 1st Division of the People's Militia was created in the Leninsky District. It included workers of factories and plants, teachers and university students.
However, the fact that the Nazis did not invade the city does not mean that there were no threats and damages. The greatest danger was enemy air raids and bombing. The second section illustrates how Moscow residents lived in an atmosphere of constant danger, defended their homes, architectural monuments and cultural heritage.
Besides information materials, users may explore maps, photographs and listen to an audio recording.
