Lake Baikal will receive a 3-D digital "twin", created by scientists of the Irkutsk Branch of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"The digital copy of Lake Baikal includes everything: hydrology, seismic and atmosphere data. We want to create a modern digital image and fill it with real numbers and coefficients", said Alexander Sergeev, the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

"We should place devices in certain places that will give the real information about physical parameters. Our model will be useful after data processing.  Then we will get an opportunity to predict all the possible situations with Lake Baikal", he added.

"The project includes the creation of monitoring complexes - working tools sufficient to resolve all issues related to the lake's ecosystem", added Alexander Sergeev.

The creation of a digital copy will take 3-4 years.

"The digital copy of Baikal" is one of the results of the project of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. It is entitled "Fundamental terms, methods and technologies for digital monitoring and forecasting of the ecological situation of the Baikal natural territory", which is performed by a consortium of 14 academic institutes. The project coordinator is the Matrosov Institute for System Dynamics and Control Theory of the Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences (Irkutsk).
