Memorable Dates of Russia: Saint-Petersburg to host the exhibition "Emperor Nicholas I - the Founder of the Russian Railways", marking the 225th anniversary of the Emperor

6 July 2021

On July 6, 2021, the Central Museum of Railway Transport of the Russian Federation (Saint-Petersburg) will launch the exhibition "Emperor Nicholas I - the Founder of the Russian Railways". It marks the 225th anniversary of the Emperor, who reigned in Russia from 1825 to 1855.

In memoirs of contemporaries and descendants, he will forever remain the emperor-engineer, who provided many technical changes in Russia. They significantly improved people's lives and contributed to the further development of technological progress.

The main event in the transport industry was the construction of railway lines - Saint-Petersburg - Tsarskoye Selo, Warsaw - Vienna, Saint Petersburg - Moscow, Saint-Petersburg - Warsaw.

The museum collections preserved a unique double-dial telegraph apparatus by B. S. Jacobi of 1843, which provided communication between the office of Nicholas I in the Winter Palace and the office of the Director of Communications and Public Buildings, Count P. A. Kleinmichel (115 Fontanka River Embankment).

The anniversary exposition "Emperor Nicholas I - the Founder of the Russian Railways" is a landmark event in museum life. In 1902, a building for the Museum of Emperor Nicholas I Railways Department appeared at Sadovaya Street in Saint-Petersburg. The creator of the project was the architect P. S. Kupinsky. The Minister of Railways M. I. Khilkov was an active participant. This building is still a living monument to the great emperor-engineer.
