12 July 2021

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts (Moscow) will launch a research project to study a group of objects from the world-famous Trojan collection by Heinrich Schliemann. At the first stage of the project, the specialists will survey 65 jewellery items of all 13 treasures from the museum collections. The study process will be available at museumconservation.ru.

The Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts features and exhibits a collection of 259 items. These objects originate from 13 treasures discovered by Heinrich Schliemann during the excavations of Troy in 1873 and 1878-1890. There are various decorations, vessels, anthropomorphic figurines, hammer-axes, rock crystal products, etc. Moscow received items from 13 treasures (out of 19) from the Berlin collection formed in 1881. Moscow selection comprises mainly things of precious metals and gems.

The research project of the Pushkin Museum is a global scientific event. The first stage will include macro photography and the study of the composition of metals with special equipment. Items from the Trojan collection exist either in a single copy or have a small number of analogies. They have never been studied by modern scientific methods. Today a completely new stage in the history of this unique collection begins. All stages of work will be filmed. Then the museum specialist will create a series of mini-films with expert commentary.
