Society and Culture: Interregional Conference "Visual Text in Historical and Cultural Landscape" to hold in Syktyvkar

23 July 2021

On September 23-25, 2021, Syktyvkar will host an Interregional Scientific and Practical Conference marking the 110th anniversary of the National Museum of the Komi Republic. The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Archives of the Komi Republic.

The anniversary museum conference will raise the issues of describing, preserving and representing visual sources: photo materials, fine art pieces, graphic works, documentary films, etc. The organizers promote the discussion of approaches to reading visual texts delivered by objects and landscapes around us and visual representation of ethnic history in museums. They will spotlight the history of the formation of visual collections and provide examples of creating historical and cultural concepts in museum exhibitions, educational programs, landscapes of small towns and other locations.

Visual sources today are more than just illustrations to research. They are of great significance for scientists - historians, ethnographers, culture researchers and museum specialists - collections curators. They all strive to develop effective methods for getting information (descriptions, attributions) from such sources. Mastering the ways of working with cinematographic documents (including systems of visual anthropology, exchange of information about collections of visual sources on various topics in museum collections, cataloguing) is necessary to increase the information field and the base of sources for humanitarian research.

Besides visual sources in the study of regional history, it is planned to consider approaches to their use in the museum space and beyond. The program includes the analysis of representative potentialities of visual resources as territorial or national markers, a technology for creating visual content and methods of working with them in the socio-cultural space.
