31 July 2021

The State Museum-Reserve "Peterhof" is planning to hold the Scientific and Practical Conference "The Palace as a Portrait of the Owner" as part of the celebration program of Peter the Great’s 350th anniversary. It is devoted to the fate of the palaces that belonged to Peter I and his contemporaries.

Houses and palaces associated with Peter the Great are numerous. Many cities are proud of the houses where the emperor stayed, buildings and fortresses established by him or built according to his plan. Some of them, like the ensemble of Peterhof' palaces, have been preserved within three centuries. The palaces of Peter the Great, as well as the architectural complexes realized according to his plans may be interpreted as "portraits" of the first Russian emperor. They embody his personal qualities, political and aesthetic preferences and the historical and cultural experience of his European travels. The fate of Peter the Great's architectural monuments conveys the historical concept of his political ideas.

Historians, culturologists, researchers of the personality and deeds of Peter the Great, art historians, museums specialists, scientific and educational institutions are invited to participate in the conference.

The following topics are proposed for discussion:

- Palaces of Peter the Great: idea - realization - monument;

- History of the construction of imperial residences and palaces in the era of Peter the Great;

- Interaction of customers, architects, artists in the history of the creation of palaces of Peter the Great's time;

- Memory of Peter the Great's personality in the palace and park spaces of the XVIII-XIX centuries;

- Museum life of the palace - experience in constructing the image of the Owner;

- Personality of Peter the Great in historical memory and the development of approaches to the artefacts of his era.

The format and dates of the conference may be altered, depending on the epidemiological situation. The event may be held online.
