Internet and History: Archive materials about the Smolensk battle in 1941 go public

Istoriya.RF portal provides access to archival materials about the Smolensk battle in 1941. The heroic defence of the city stopped the Nazi offensive against Moscow.

The array of declassified documents from the collections of the Central Archives of the Ministry of Defence includes maps of military operations, orders, operational, military and political reports.

"The documents reveal the extreme degree of courage and dedication of the Red Army soldiers and commanders in preventing the German Army Group Center from capturing Smolensk Region and several neighbouring territories", said Mikhail Myagkov, Scientific Director of the Russian Military Historical Society.

According to him, the exploits of soldiers and commanders of the 16th, 19th and 21st armies during the battle reaped eternal glory.
