Internet and History: Discover Moscow portal released the "It's Moscow behind Us" online quest

30 September 2021

The Discover Moscow portal and the Victory Museum prepared an online quest It's Moscow behind Us. It is devoted to the defence of the capital during the Great Patriotic War.

"The online quest includes ten questions related to the exposition of the Victory Museum and some facts about the defence of Moscow during the Great Patriotic War. Answering the questions, users will remember historical events, look at the exhibits of the Victory Museum, and explore the Counteroffensive near Moscow diorama, the People's Heroic Exploit exposition and an open-air exhibition of military equipment. They will also learn about decisions by the State Defence Committee and weapons used during the defence operation", the press service of the Moscow IT Department said.

The offensive of the enemy on Moscow began on September 30, 1941. The German troops wanted to defeat the Red Army with one military strike and capture the capital, so they called their plan with the relevant codeword. The participants should call the name of the Nazi offensive.

However, the plans failed. Instead of the German army parade planned by Hitler, the Red Square hosted a parade of Soviet troops. The quest features the question about its date. Some questions are devoted to fighting equipment and armament. For example, the participants will remember which planes of the air defence forces used rockets similar to those in Katyusha multiple rocket launchers, which aviation defended the sky over the capital, and which bombs the enemies dropped on wooden buildings to cause fires.

Participants will also recall the names of legendary heroes. Besides, the online quest provides the virtual tour to People's Heroic Exploit exposition and a large-scale diorama complex illustrating the key events of the war. Users will see the walls of the besieged Brest Fortress, destroyed houses of Soviet villages, the library of besieged Leningrad, a military hospital, an apartment of the underground movement, the square of the liberated European capital, and the gates of one of the concentration camps.
