History and Culture: Art and cultural project "Icons of St. Nicholas Church from the Village of Kovda. Marking the 315th Anniversary of Construction" launched in Murmansk
The Murmansk Regional Art Museum presents the exhibition "Icons of St. Nicholas Church from the Village of Kovda. Marking the 315th Anniversary of Construction". The art and cultural project brings together at the single exposition space icons from the collection of the State Russian Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia, the Murmansk Regional Art Museum, and items provided by the Murmansk Eparchy.
The church of St. Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra, is dedicated to a saint especially revered in the Kola North. Many Pomor villages had churches or chapels dedicated to St. Nicholas.
The existing iconographic type of icons of St. Nicholas is very different. People prayed in front of these icons in churches, peasant houses, and fishing huts. The image of St. Nicholas was also the road icon for travellers.
After the closing of churches in 1960, the icons were sent to different storage centres. For a long time, there was no idea of the location of all the items from Kovda. Gradually, the fate of the icons became more obvious.
The exhibition will run until October 31, 2021.
