History and Culture: Exhibition "Alexey Venetsianov. Space, Light and Silence" to open in Moscow

30 September 2021

On September 30, 2021, the State Tretyakov Gallery (Engineering Building, 12 Lavrushinsky Lane, Moscow) will launch the exhibition "Alexey Venetsianov. Space, Light and Silence".

The exhibition project highlights one of the brightest and most harmonious masters of the epoch of romanticism - Alexey Venetsianov (1780-1847). The exhibition features more than 80 paintings and graphic works from the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Tver Picture Gallery, the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, the State Historical Museum and other museums of Russia.

Alexey Venetsianov, who lived during the time of serfdom, found the source of artistic inspiration and aesthetic experiences in the Russian peasantry and the modest landscape of Tver land. This world discovered by the artist is full of deep respect and love.

Having an idea of educating young talents from the peasants, Venetsianov created his school, which became a noticeable phenomenon in the cultural life of Russia. Therefore, besides the works of the master, the exhibition presents several paintings by his students - Alexey Tyranov, Nikifor Krylov, Alexander Alekseyev, Fyodor Slavyansky, Grigory Soroka and others. Various museums provided their works full of classical clarity and romantic spirit. They display how artists revealed the spiritual beauty and dignity of the Russian peasantry.

The work of Venetsianov and his followers is well known and beloved; many canvases are in the permanent museum expositions. However, such categories of the art perception like "space", "light", and "silence" reveals and accentuates the remarkable features and artistic qualities of presented works.

The exhibition will run until February 6, 2022.
