
Information Technology and Regions of Russia: Rare ancient books digitized in North Ossetia
V. I. Abayev North-Ossetian Institute of Humanitarian and Social Studies (Vladikavkaz) digitized more than 150 books from the Rare Book Department of its Scientific Library. Some publications are over 200 years old.
The Institute's specialists used a planetary scanner to work with old books. It allows making copies of historical documents that require a delicate approach. Experts digitized such rare publications as the first Ossetian printed book Primary for Those Who Wants to Learn the Holy Books, published in 1798 with a circulation of about 1000 copies; Ossetian Grammar of 1844, Legends of the Narts of 1924 and others.
All digitized books are available at the North Ossetian Institute. Some of them are in the public domain in PDF format on the official website. In total, the collections of the Institute's Scientific Library have more than 86 thousand copies. The Rare Book Department features more than 4 thousand publications.
The work on the digitization of old books continues. The specialists plan to make digital copies of the entire Institute's Archive.
