26 December 2021

Two years ago, the Leipzig Bach Archives received an extensive array of historical documents of the St. Thomas Choir. All materials were digitized and made available for free.

The speech is about almost a hundred autographs, with a total volume of about 20 thousand pages. Now they are available at https://digitalesammlungen.bach-leipzig.de/.

Peter Wollny, the director of the Bach Archives, notes: "The inclusion of these documents in the digital collection gives researchers easy access to this treasure, highlighting the attractiveness of Leipzig as a city of science". The director also said that the St. Thomas Choir Archives was "one of the greatest treasures in the history of European music". Its connection to the musical, educational, cultural and socio-historical context of the city's history made these rarities "an exceptional cultural heritage". The St. Thomas Choir is an internationally renowned boys' choir founded in 1212. From 1723 to 1750, Johann Sebastian Bach was its cantor.
