History and Culture: Exhibition "Descended from the Sky. Theotokos of Tikhvin from a Private Collection" presented at the Andrei Rublev Museum in Moscow
The Andrei Rublev Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art in Moscow launched the exhibition "Descended from the Sky. Theotokos of Tikhvin from a Private Collection". For the first time, it showcases a unique icon from a private collection - the image of Theotokos of Tikhvin with 12 scenes from the hagiography. This icon has a difficult but fascinating fate.
The central image of the Theotokos with the Child, created in the last third of the XVI century, originally was an independent icon. At the beginning of the XVII century, it was inserted into a frame illustrating the story of the miraculous Tikhvin Icon. Plots and their arrangement reveal the specific circumstances of the frame's creation. It was a kind of customer response to the topical events of his time.
The exhibition will run until January 22, 2022.
