History and culture: Exhibition "Aristocratic Portrait in Russia" from the collections of the State Historical Museum presented in Novosibirsk

13 January 2022

The exhibition "Aristocratic Portrait in Russia" from the collections of the State Historical Museum (Moscow) has been opened at the Novosibirsk State Art Museum within the framework of the national project "Culture".

The aristocratic portrait is an important part of the collection of pictorial portraits of the Historical Museum. Portraits of representatives of ancient Russian families and the new nobility were ordered "for the memory of their offspring...". Through the creative efforts of various painters, high society portrait galleries were formed, combining ceremonial and chamber images from the capital's mansions and provincial estates. They included canvases not only by the leading painters of their time, but also by little-known ones, including estate artists.

The exhibition aims to reveal the memorative, iconographic and artistic components of the domestic art of the portrait of the tribal nobility, as they were deposited in cultural memory thanks to the collecting, primarily museum activities.
