Marking Russian Language Day: Nizhny Novgorod Regional State Scientific Library hosts a series of events

On June 6, the world celebrates Russian Language Day, marking the birthday of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, the great Russian poet, the originator of modern Russian literary language. The initiative of celebrating Russian language as one of the UN’s official languages was first introduced at the meeting of the United Nations Department of Public Information on February 20, 2010, on the eve of International Mother Language Day, as part of the multilingualism and culture diversity program. The program promotes equal use of all six of the UN’s official languages (English, Arabic, Spanish, Chinese, Russian, and French), as well as awareness of history and culture of every language. On June 6, 2011, President of Russia has signed the decree on annual celebration of Russian Language Day in Russia.

Literary legacy of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin is on a par with the greatest phenomena of world culture. Works of A. S. Pushkin have been translated to dozens of foreign languages.

Marking the Pushkin Day on June 6, Lenin Nizhny Novgorod Regional State Universal Scientific Library has prepared various trivia, quizzes, and literary exhibitions on Pushkin. Visitors will have an opportunity to test themselves on the knowledge of work and biography of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin.
