Memorable Dates of Russia: State Russian Museum presents exhibition “Mikhail Vrubel. To the 165th anniversary of the Artist”

12 June 2022

The exhibition Mikhail Vrubel. To the 165th Anniversary of the Artist has been opened in the Benois Wing of the Mikhailovsky Palace (State Russian Museum). The exhibition features over 200 pieces from the collections of the Russian Museum and the Tretyakov Gallery, as well as the private collections from St. Petersburg and Moscow. It allows to introduce visitors to the artistic legacy of the remarkable painter. For more than 60 years, the painter’s works from the collections of the Tretyakov Gallery haven’t been brought to St. Petersburg. The pieces from the Russian Museum haven’t been shown to the public for a long time as well.

Paintings “Flying Demon”, “Demon Seated”, “Swan Princess”, “Bogatyr”, illustrations for the works by Mikhail Lermontov, compositions inspired by the poetic images by Alexander Pushkin (“Prophet”, “Six-winged Seraph”) have become an integral part of the national culture. Alongside recognized masterpieces, the exhibition displays works that are still little known to the general public.

The biggest national symbolist and master of the modern style Mikhail Vrubel (1856-1910) was richly gifted, just like the titans of the Renaissance. He has mostly implemented his talent in paintings, graphics, and decorative arts. All of the areas of his creative heritage are presented at the exhibition. Famous paintings and drawings are showcased in the Benois Wing, while the collection of master’s polychrome maiolicas are displayed on the second floor, in the hall №87 of the permanent exposition of the Russian Museum.

The exhibition will run until August 2, 2022.
